The Colorado Avalanche have been the odds-on favorite to win the Stanley Cup for most of the season, and they still hold the No. 1 spot on the first day of the playoffs. Colorado jumped from +600 to +550 in January, and they have now seen their odds move from +475 to +350 over the last couple of months. The Colorado offense has been firing on all cylinders for most of the season, which is a big reason why they own the best odds at the Stanley Cup. During the regular season, Colorado scored 3.76 goals per game, which was the fourth-most in the league. Superstar Cale Makar led all NHL defensemen with 28 goals, while other stars like Mikko Rantanen, Nathan MacKinnon, and Nazem Kadri all averaged well over a point per game. The Avs were especially dominant on their doubledowncasino ice, as they went 32-5-4 at Ball Arena.

Looking to win their first Stanley Cup since 2000-01, the Avalanche are set to take on Juuse Saros and the Nashville Predators in the first round. The Avs are heavy favorites to win the series (-650), while the Preds are +450 to pull the series upset and +4500 to win the Stanley Cup.

Following the Avalanche, the Florida Panthers (+550), Calgary Flames (+800), and Toronto Maple Leafs (+900) are top teams in the Stanley Cup futures market. The Tampa Bay Lightning are looking to three-peat as champions, and they round out the top-five at +1100 to pull it off.

Other teams in the running include the Carolina Hurricanes (+1200), Minnesota Wild (+1600), New York Rangers (+1600), Boston Bruins (+1600), Edmonton Oilers (+1800), Pittsburgh Penguins (+1800) and St Louis Blues (+2000). The four teams with the longest odds include the Washington Capitals (+3000), Nashville Predators (+4500), Dallas Stars (+4500), and Los Angeles Kings (+6000).

There is nothing like playoff hockey, and as we know, anything can happen. Let’s take a deeper dive into three teams with high hopes:

Florida Panthers (+550)

The Panthers won the Presidents Trophy this season, as they led the league with 122 points. Since the 2004-05 lockout, just two Presidents’ Trophy winners have gone on to win the Stanley Cup (2008 Red Wings and 2013 Blackhawks). The Panthers are looking to be the third. Florida possesses a lethal offense that scored a league-high 4.11 goals per game in the regular season. Their offense got even stronger at the trade deadline when they got Claude Giroux from the Flyers. Since joining the Panthers, Giroux has racked up 23 points (3 goals, 20 assists) in 18 games. Giroux is an extremely skilled passer and can do some damage on the power play, as 11 of his 23 points with the Panthers have come on the man-advantage. With other stars like Jonathan Huberdeau and Aleksander Barkov in the mix, an offense like Florida’s is capable of doing some serious damage. The Panthers are heavy favorites (-350) to take care of business against the Capitals (+260) in the first round.

Carolina Hurricanes (+1200)

The Carolina Hurricanes are one of the most well-rounded hockey teams in the league. They are especially strong on the defensive end, as they allowed a league-low 2.44 goals per game during the regular season. They also allowed the fewest shots per game in the league (28.2), and had the league’s best penalty kill at 88.0%. With a defense like that, the Canes have the ability to limit the league’s top offenses. But they can score too, as Sebastian Aho and Andrei Svechnikov scored 37 and 30 goals respectively. There could be some great value on the Canes to win it all at +1200. Carolina takes on Boston in the first round, and oddsmakers are expecting a tight series. The Hurricanes are -115 to advance to the second round, while the Bruins are -105.

New York Rangers (+1600)

It is no secret that in order to win the Stanley Cup, you need to have solid goaltending. The Rangers certainly have that in Igor Shesterkin. Shesterkin led the NHL in goals against average (2.07) and save percentage (.935) during the regular season. He was also fourth in wins with 36. His spectacular play has him all but a lock for the Vezina Trophy (-1200), which is given to the league’s best goaltender. If he stays strong between the pipes, there is tremendous value on the Rangers to win the Stanley Cup. At the trade deadline, New York bolstered their lineup with the addition of Andrew Copp from Winnipeg. The University of Michigan product has tremendous versatility, as he can play all three forward spots, up in the lineup with skilled offensive stars, or down the lineup in a more defensive role. He can also play on both special teams, which he has already done with the Rangers. New York has an intriguing first round matchup with the Pittsburgh Penguins. The Broadway blueshirts are -115 to advance, while Sidney Crosby and the Pens are -105. This could be one of the most exciting first round matchups.

How Stanley Cup Bettings Odds Are Calculated

Stanley Cup odds are available for the entirety of the NHL season. They begin as a futures bet, and tend to open for the next season around the time the current season’s Stanley Cup gets underway. Bets for the 2022 Stanley Cup are available on all sports betting platforms now. Odds for the 2023 Stanley Cup will most likely become available in the next few months as this year’s playoffs unfold.

Professional oddsmakers generate lines and odds for each team and each game based on a variety of factors. Throughout the course of the regular season and playoffs, Stanley Cup odds fluctuate based on a team’s performance. In addition, factors such as trades, injuries, matchups, and coaching changes can impact Stanley Cup odds.

In all Stanley Cup Playoff games, there are a wide variety of bets available. These include moneylines, puck lines (point spread), game totals, series props, team props, player props and parlays.

What Is An NHL Futures Bet?

An “NHL futures bet” is a bet that fans can make on an event, series, or award that will occur or get awarded at some point in the future. For hockey fans, betting on the winner of the Stanley Cup is one of the most common. Other popular NHL futures bets include award winners like the Vezina Trophy and Calder Trophy.

Fans can make futures bets related to the Stanley Cup at any time prior to the conclusion of the conference finals.

What Is A Stanley Cup Prop Bet

Stanley Cup prop bets, or proposition bets, are bets regarding aspects of the game or series but not tied directly to the final score. Stanley Cup MVP is probably the most popular one, but fans can also bet on how long the series will last, who will score the first goal in each game, who wins each period of a game, etc.

Other common player props include shots on goal, saves, and points. The possibilities for prop bets are limitless, but books do not post prop bets on things like the National Anthem or other things completely unrelated to the game like they do for the Super Bowl.

How Can I Bet On The Stanley Cup In Vegas

If you are heading to Vegas but want to see what the odds are on the Stanley Cup in Sin City first, several websites (,,,, etc.) publish odds from Vegas sportsbooks.

As for where to place bets in Vegas, pick a casino, and you will be able to find a sportsbook willing to take your bet. Online betting is legal (and retail) if you do not want to visit a casino. But you will have to open an account in person at the sportsbook inside the casino first.

Strategies For Stanley Cup Betting

Much like it is important to approach betting in the regular season with a strategy, bettors should do the same when it comes to the Stanley Cup. You could be conservative and bet on the favorite, but the odds are not always profitable. For example, if a team is favored at -500, it may not be worth it to risk $500 to potentially win $100.

The winner is often one of the top four seeded teams, with the 2-seed the most successful in recent years. But every seed has made it to the Final at least once since 2002. Each has won at least once, except for the 7-seed.

So, if you cannot count on the top teams, what do you do?

  • Research: to make an informed decision, you need to know as much as possible about the two teams playing.
  • Zig-Zag Theory: When evenly matched teams face-off, it is not unusual for whoever loses Game 1 to bounce back and win Game 2. Then the loser of Game 2 bounces back to win Game 3.
  • Fading the Public: This is not as prevalent in hockey as in other sports due to the volume of bets placed on the Stanley Cup.
  • Middling: It is not a common strategy for hockey games but involves making two bets on a game, one on each team with the second coming after the line moves.
  • Line Shopping: If you are going to bet on a game, you might as well do so with the book that will give you the highest payout. So, before you put money down with one book, check a few others to see if any has better odds.
  • Alternate Lines: If you are extremely confident in one team over another, alternate lines are a great way to increase your potential payout. However, you must be careful. Get too greedy, and you can lose a game you should have won.
